YY9 Gallery is pleased to present "Poetic Space", a joint exhibition by Arthur Chan and Sim Chan. In this exhibition, the two local artists will present their latest series of artworks which provide a brand-new perception of poetic space via the transformation and deconstruction of architecture in the cityscape into creative works of interactive installation. Through the process of art creation, both manage to create a metaphorical narrative that depicts the hidden memory and hence defines the soul of the city.

Arthur's latest sculpture series, "traces of the city", transforms some peculiar silhouettes of the city into various forms of pictorial representation, which capture unique shapes and scenes we see every day such as the outlines of skyscrapers, streets, back lanes and open spaces. Sim’s sculpture series, "CityKite", aims to reflect the impact of urbanization by means of traditional craftsmanship — kite making. While it is often seemingly impossible to fly a kite in a crowded city, the artist intends to create his latest series of artwork as an analogy between the urban dwellers and the banned kites in the city, revealing and symbolizing the dream of kites and hence urban dwellers to fly free from all the constraints the sake of freedom.

Hong Kong Refugee Advice Centre

www.hkrac.org

The Hong Kong Refugee Advice Centre is the only not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing free legal advice and assistance to refugees making claims for asylum before the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Hong Kong. Legal recognition as a refugee is the first step in enabling a refugee to rebuild their life and since our establishment in 2007, we have supported over 800 refugees and their families in their claims for protection.

Without our legal assistance, many cases are mistakenly rejected because refugees rarely understand international refugee law or the process of applying for asylum, or because the refugee is traumatized and unable to give their history in a coherent and legally relevant manner.

Alongside our core staff team, we support refugees through the process of applying for protection in Hong Kong by recruiting, training and supervising a team of volunteer lawyers, caseworkers and interpreters. Your donation will enable us to provide this life-saving advice to even more refugees, recruit and train more volunteer caseworkers and interpreters, and promote refugees' rights throughout Hong Kong.

New Project - An Artwork Related Human Right

City Kite / 80 cm x 82 cm
 / Acrylic paint, stainless steel, aluminum, bamboo, wire / 2013

An Artwork Related Human Right:

Artist: Sim Chan
Title: CityKite
Dimension: 80 cm x 82 cm
Materials: Acrylic paint, stainless steel, aluminum, bamboo, wire
Year: 2013

題目:City Kite

Artwork Brief:

This is a sky silhouette of a city,
is a denunciation of life,

This is an abnormally heavy kite,
is a competition of finding freedom, pursuing a dream,

This is a metal mirror surfaced kite,
is a reality reflection carrier;

This is a notice to ban kite flying,
is an action to confronting inequality.

Pulling the city and the kite together, it would be a contradiction.
Kite symbolizes humanity, belong to the natural world and Liberal. According to the law, public can not fly a kite above sixty meters height from the ground, and no less than sixty meter away from the boats, cars or buildings. It means they do not have the freedom of flying under the law. If the world are full of building, where can the kite go?

Taking a step further, If "kite" is a metaphor to "human life",
When a kite in the city, What would it lose?
When people in the society, What would they lose?

是一種對生活控訴的表現;

是一個追求自由,追尋夢想的鬥爭;

是一個反映現實的載體;

  Exhibition catalogue for the solo exhibition of Sim Chan – Viewfinder. The exhibition showcased paintings and mixed media works, which address the artist's differing points of view towards the sky and the cityscape. As the work/canvas is always Chan's window to the outside world, a simple frame lockup is created to symbolize "Viewfinder". A 8-page cover is specially used for the catalog cover for showcasing the artist's new horizontal works from the "SimCity" series, which delineate a panoramic view of random edifices in an open environment. - See more at: http://www.muuute.com/projects/viewfinder-solo-exhibition-by-sim-chan-catalog/#sthash.QXgfmwlG.dpuf

SimKites 2013 Apr

Artist: Sim Chan
Year: 2013
Materials: Acrylic paint, kite paper, bamboo, string
Dimension: Size variable
Location: Jockey Club Atrium of Hong Kong Arts Centre

“We always hope to see an infinite sky but our emotional status and personal viewpoints affect what we really see. The kite series, presented in an art installation, seems to be collecting pieces of the sky being viewed by different individuals. Kites containing sky images fly up to the sky illustrate the balance of dream and reality, which is also Chan’s exploration of human beings and space.”

Artist Biography
Sim Chan was born in Hong Kong in 1987 and graduated from Hong Kong Art School, majoring in Painting. Sim set up his studio in Fotan in 2007 and participated in the artist-in-residence program in Beijing in 2009. Sim's works have been exhibited in different cities such as Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, Tokyo, Thailand and Melbourne etc. Sim's work is a tangible expression of the desire to unlock and blur boundaries of forms within the city. He has been depicting the local cityscape and the urban architecture intensively.

100 ft PARK is pleased to present the exhibition "Crafting Sky" from 24 May to 16 June 2013. On display is a set of installation work co-created by artist Sim Chan and architect Stanley Siu. As a continuance of the SimKites Series, Sim Chan collaborates with Stanley Siu to explore new perspectives in seeing three dimensional spaces and attempt to break through the limitations of two dimensional paintings, integrating architectural design and art creation to experiment new angles in understanding and perceiving space and volume.

Works of Sim Chan have been full of architectural elements, from the source of inspiration to the composition of his works, as well as the hand-made skyline silhouette wooden mounts. All these involve accurate calculation and knowledge in geometry which allow Sim to depict the ever-changing sky in a mathematically logic way. Stanley Siu has found the common grounds between art and architecture in Sim’s works – the urban context, massing in architecture, city’s boundary and skyline. With the application of computer modeling programme, Stanley designed three dimensional forms of irregular shapes for Sim’s paintings. The work of a set of three on display, in cubic meter as their volume unit, depicts the sky and clouds in different time of a day. Details of architecture are not presented but only the contour is delineated. The sky is carried, sectioned and shaped. Under different viewing angles, the contour of the three dimensional work and the lines in the painting work together and subtly lead to new possibilities in reading two dimensional surfaces. Viewers are inspired to observe and understand space from various points of view.

Sim Chan graduated from Hong Kong Art School majoring in Painting. He was selected as one of the nominees for the Sovereign Asian Art Prize in 2011. He was awarded “40under40” global creative talent by Perspective Magazine in 2013. Sim’s works have been exhibited widely in Hong Kong and Asia. Recently, he was commissioned to create a public art installation at the Jockey Club Atrium of the Hong Kong Arts Centre. Stanely Siu grew up and studied in New Zealand and graduated from Department of Architecture. He returned to Hong Kong after graduation and has been practicing in architectural design. Participated projects are in Hong Kong and China. Stanley has a great interest in Arts and hopes to connect art with architecture. He participated as a team in 2011 – 2012 Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism / Architecture showing the work Sugar Treasure.

Members of the press are warmly invited to attend the opening reception. For enquiries, please contact 6143-7029 or email to info@100ftPARK.com
