Artist: Sim Chan
Year: 2013
Materials: Acrylic paint, kite paper, bamboo, string
Dimension: Size variable
Location: Jockey Club Atrium of Hong Kong Arts Centre

“We always hope to see an infinite sky but our emotional status and personal viewpoints affect what we really see. The kite series, presented in an art installation, seems to be collecting pieces of the sky being viewed by different individuals. Kites containing sky images fly up to the sky illustrate the balance of dream and reality, which is also Chan’s exploration of human beings and space.”

Artist Biography
Sim Chan was born in Hong Kong in 1987 and graduated from Hong Kong Art School, majoring in Painting. Sim set up his studio in Fotan in 2007 and participated in the artist-in-residence program in Beijing in 2009. Sim's works have been exhibited in different cities such as Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, Tokyo, Thailand and Melbourne etc. Sim's work is a tangible expression of the desire to unlock and blur boundaries of forms within the city. He has been depicting the local cityscape and the urban architecture intensively. Sim tries to explore the underneath correlations between people’s lifestyle and the changes made upon nature, which also reveals his pursuit of dream amid the struggles in reality.

100 ft PARK is pleased to present the exhibition "Crafting Sky" from 24 May to 16 June 2013. On display is a set of installation work co-created by artist Sim Chan and architect Stanley Siu. As a continuance of the SimKites Series, Sim Chan collaborates with Stanley Siu to explore new perspectives in seeing three dimensional spaces and attempt to break through the limitations of two dimensional paintings, integrating architectural design and art creation to experiment new angles in understanding and perceiving space and volume.

Works of Sim Chan have been full of architectural elements, from the source of inspiration to the composition of his works, as well as the hand-made skyline silhouette wooden mounts. All these involve accurate calculation and knowledge in geometry which allow Sim to depict the ever-changing sky in a mathematically logic way. Stanley Siu has found the common grounds between art and architecture in Sim’s works – the urban context, massing in architecture, city’s boundary and skyline. With the application of computer modeling programme, Stanley designed three dimensional forms of irregular shapes for Sim’s paintings. The work of a set of three on display, in cubic meter as their volume unit, depicts the sky and clouds in different time of a day. Details of architecture are not presented but only the contour is delineated. The sky is carried, sectioned and shaped. Under different viewing angles, the contour of the three dimensional work and the lines in the painting work together and subtly lead to new possibilities in reading two dimensional surfaces. Viewers are inspired to observe and understand space from various points of view.

Sim Chan graduated from Hong Kong Art School majoring in Painting. He was selected as one of the nominees for the Sovereign Asian Art Prize in 2011. He was awarded “40under40” global creative talent by Perspective Magazine in 2013. Sim’s works have been exhibited widely in Hong Kong and Asia. Recently, he was commissioned to create a public art installation at the Jockey Club Atrium of the Hong Kong Arts Centre. Stanely Siu grew up and studied in New Zealand and graduated from Department of Architecture. He returned to Hong Kong after graduation and has been practicing in architectural design. Participated projects are in Hong Kong and China. Stanley has a great interest in Arts and hopes to connect art with architecture. He participated as a team in 2011 – 2012 Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism / Architecture showing the work Sugar Treasure.

Members of the press are warmly invited to attend the opening reception. For enquiries, please contact 6143-7029 or email to info@100ftPARK.com

Viewfinder - Solo Exhibition by Sim Chan

OPENING RECEPTION
Saturday, 3 November 2012, 5-7pm (Artist will be in attendance)
EXHIBITION PERIOD

3 November – 8 December, 2012

Venue: Red Elation Gallery G/F, 5-6 Lung On Street, Wan Chai, Hong Kong

Red Elation Gallery is pleased to announce “Viewfinder” -the first solo exhibition of Sim Chan at the gallery. The exhibition showcases paintings and mixed media works by Chan. The works were completed between 2009 and 2012, and address the artist's differing points of view towards the sky and the cityscape.

Skies in the city are always Chan's subject. Like looking through the viewfinder of a camera, Chan's painting series - "SimCity" and "SimSky" - capture images of the sky surrounded by crowded high-rises. On one hand, delicate and conceptual depictions of ghetto-style city buildings unfold into aggressive urban growth that we face; on the other hand, the painting's vanishing points converge high-up in the skies, reminding us how confined our urban dwelling lives can be. This confinement is actually man-made which synchronizes here with Chan's self-crafted wooden frames for his canvases. These symbolic cut-out shapes of the sky are loaded with lots of calculation and effort, implying that the canvas and frame as the media of painting are not only surfaces to be painted on, but also forms to be created. Here, Chan's works advise us of the need to question with a greater sense of engagement with life.

Chan's recent work demonstrates his other state of mind of seeing. His new horizontal works from the "SimCity" series delineate a panoramic view of random edifices in an open environment. Unlike his previous paintings, the canvas becomes the artist's window to the outside world which provides him with a different vision, yet isolation. The sense of remoteness is further stressed in his new mixed media installation, which collects fragmented views of the sky at different moments captured by anonymous eyes. "We always hope there are wider spaces and sky to be looked at" said Chan, "indeed, they might be right there when you turn your head. However, it just seldom gets through people's busy minds."

“Viewfinder” is guest-curated by Helen Ng

Sim Chan (born in Hong Kong, 1987) graduated from the Hong Kong Art School in 2008. He has participated in different exhibitions in the region since 2007, including Melbourne, Tokyo, Thailand, Singapore, Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong. Chan set up his Fotan studio in 2007 and has also participated in an artist-in-residence program in Beijing in 2009.

When I manage to look up from my smartphone while walking around the streets of Hong Kong I often find myself looking up, looking way up to catch a glimpse of the sky. With both of these activities I risk bumping into someone but it's worth the risk. Not only have Sim's paintings inspired me to examine the broader physical world above me but they have caused me to pause to think about my life. We voluntarily surround ourselves with gadgets, and buildings, and immerse ourselves in our self made prisons. The sky offers us a glimpse of hope, an alternative to the congested, claustrophobic existence of many Hong Kongers.

Sim himself is inspirational. He has dedicated himself to his art and foregone the perceived comforts of a steady job. His technique and conceptualization continue to transform a simple idea into amazing works of art that operate on multiple levels. A closer examination of his paintings will reveal detailed brushstrokes and textures and with a few steps back, the image will open to the viewer.

Young great artists have our support and we hope you will join us in supporting their search for the heavens.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Looking at artist via his viewfinder

Viewfinder is a little window on camera which people looks through to compose their photograph. It is always fixed in size where people can prescribe what they prefer within a given shape by lensing. The process of imaging and the applied technology reflect the boundaries that we have imposed and we face. The distance shown within viewfinder also addresses viewer on one side and objects on the other side. After all, our subjectivity in interpreting this viewer-object relationship is implied through the little image captured.

These changing interpretations are always Chan's interest. Like looking through the viewfinder of camera, Chan's painting series - "SimCity" and "SimSky" - capture images of the sky surrounded by crowded high-rises. On one hand, the delicate and conceptual depictions of ghetto-style city buildings unfold into an aggressive urban growth that we face; on the other hand, the painting's vanishing points converge high-up in the skies, reminding us how confined our urban dwelling lives can be. This confinement is actually man-made which synchronizes with Chan's self-crafted wooden frames for his canvases. These symbolic cut-out shapes of the sky are loaded with lots of calculation and effort, implying that the canvas and frame as the media of painting are not only surfaces to be painted, but also forms to be created. Here, Chan's work advise us of the need to question with a greater sense of engagement with life.

Apart from the insider's worm-view angle which has been applied for a while, Chan's recent work demonstrates his other state of mind of seeing. His new "SimCity" series delineates a panoramic view of random edifices in an open environment. Unlike his previous painting, the canvas becomes the artist's window to the outside world which provides him with different vision, yet isolation. The sense of remoteness is further stressed in his new mix-media installation, which collects fragmented views of the sky at different moments captured by anonymous eyes. "We always hope there are wider spaces and sky to be looked at," said Chan, "indeed, they might be right there when you turn your head. However, it just seldom gets through people's busy minds."

This is an exhibition demonstrates Chan's ways of seeing; it is also a viewfinder for us to look at the sky on the other side.
