Recognising the important role of art in society to raise awareness and defend human rights, local human rights non-governmental organisation HKRAC has inaugurated an annual Hong Kong Human Rights Art Prize. By featuring two categories, the ground-breaking Prize both offers local artists a meaningful opportunity to showcase their work while at the same time engaging the greater community.
The Emerging Artist category was open to young professional artists in Hong Kong under the age of 35 years old. In order to enter, these artists had to be nominated by someone of good standing in the Hong Kong art community. The Community artist category was open any non-professional Hong Kong based artist of any age. HKRAC received well over 50 entries for the prize and they represented a diverse, talented and exciting collections.
With great deliberation, our judges,Melissa Lee,a visual arts lecturer at the Chinese University of Hong Kong,Kacey Wong,a well known Hong Kong artist, and Vincent Piket, the Head of Office of the European Union in Hong Kong, whittled the competition down to seven finalists in each category and 2 winners. HKRAC has also awarded an HKRAC Choice Award, chosen by its staff,to one artist in each category. Each of these four winners will be auctioned off in a live auction by Christie’s on November 5 at our event.
The finalists in each category,as well as the winners, can be seen below. Each of these 14 pieces of art will be available for sale by auction on November 5 at our one night only exhibition at the Sundaram Tagore Gallery. Please email cwaterhouse@hkrac.org for more information or prices and to RSVP if you wish to attend. Attendance is free and all are welcome.

The Hong Kong Refugee Advice Centre is the only not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing free legal advice and assistance to refugees making claims for asylum before the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Hong Kong. Legal recognition as a refugee is the first step in enabling a refugee to rebuild their life and since our establishment in 2007, we have supported over 800 refugees and their families in their claims for protection.
Without our legal assistance, many cases are mistakenly rejected because refugees rarely understand international refugee law or the process of applying for asylum, or because the refugee is traumatized and unable to give their history in a coherent and legally relevant manner.
Alongside our core staff team, we support refugees through the process of applying for protection in Hong Kong by recruiting, training and supervising a team of volunteer lawyers, caseworkers and interpreters. Your donation will enable us to provide this life-saving advice to even more refugees, recruit and train more volunteer caseworkers and interpreters, and promote refugees' rights throughout Hong Kong.
